Know the difference

Gift cards vs. reward cards

They look alike, but they work differently. Here's what to know before you buy, give or sign up.

Gift Cards

Prepaid value you can give

You load a set amount and the recipient spends it at a store, brand or network.

  • Store cards work at one brand; network cards work at many
  • Prepaid network cards may carry purchase or activation fees
  • Check expiry dates and any inactivity fees in the terms
  • Treat the card number and PIN like cash
Reward Cards

Earn as you shop

Loyalty and reward programs give you points, cashback or perks for spending you already do.

  • Points often convert to gift cards, discounts or cashback
  • Compare earn rates and how much a point is really worth
  • Watch for points that expire or require minimum redemptions
  • Legitimate programs never ask you to pay to "unlock" a reward
Smart choices

Choosing the right card in 3 steps

1

Think about the person

Where do they already shop, eat or play? A card for a place they love beats a bigger amount somewhere they never go.

2

Read the fine print

Look for activation fees, expiry dates, where it can be used, and whether it works online, in-store or both.

3

Buy from a trusted source

Buy directly from the brand or a reputable retailer, check the packaging isn't tampered with, and keep the receipt.

Tips to make every card count

๐Ÿ“ฑ

Add it to your wallet

Many brands let you store cards in their app so you never forget a balance.

๐Ÿ””

Track balances

Check your balance on the brand's official site and use small leftovers before they're forgotten.

๐ŸŽฏ

Stack rewards

Pay with a gift card and still earn points in the store's own loyalty program.

๐Ÿงพ

Keep the receipt

A receipt makes it much easier to get help if a card is lost, stolen or not activated.

Gift card scam warning signs

Gift cards are a favorite payment method for scammers because they're hard to trace. Stop if you see any of these:

  • Someone asks you to pay a bill, fine or tax with gift cards โ€” real agencies and companies never do
  • A "prize" or "free reward" that asks for fees, card details or your login first
  • Pressure to act right now or keep it secret
  • A request to read out or photograph the card number and PIN

In the U.S., report gift card scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and contact the card's issuer right away.

FAQ

Common questions

Do gift cards expire?

In the U.S., federal law generally requires store gift cards and prepaid network gift cards to be valid for at least five years from activation, and some states offer stronger protections. Always check the card's terms.

What's the difference between a store card and a prepaid card?

A store card can only be used at one brand (and sometimes its sister brands). A prepaid network card carries a payment-network logo and works at most places that accept that network, but often has a purchase fee.

How do I check my gift card balance?

Use the brand's official website or app, call the number printed on the back of the card, or ask at the register. Avoid third-party "balance checker" sites you don't recognize.

Are "free gift card" offers real?

Some legitimate reward programs let you earn gift cards over time, but anything promising a large free reward for little effort deserves caution. Read the terms, never pay to claim a prize, and don't share card numbers or PINs.

Does ShopersChoice sell gift cards?

No. ShopersChoice is an independent information resource. We help you understand your options; purchases happen directly with brands and retailers.
